Short answer

The Blancpain Fifty Fathoms launched in 1953. It was made for French Navy combat divers. Fifty fathoms is 300 feet, or 91.44 meters. Replicas of the 1953 model copy the case shape, the bezel, and the dial. They do not copy the movement, the caseback engraving, or the tested water resistance of the original.

The 1953 original

  • Steel case, about 41 mm across.
  • Automatic movement on an A. Schild base caliber.
  • Rotating bezel with a lock at 12 o'clock. The lock stopped the bezel from turning by accident.
  • Black dial, large luminous numerals, luminous hands.
  • Rated to 50 fathoms, 91.44 m.

Blancpain built the first batch for the Nageurs de Combat, a French combat swimmer unit. Civilian sales followed in the same decade.

What replica sellers mean by 1953

Most replicas sold under this name are 41 mm or 42 mm steel watches. Details change by factory and by batch.

Fifty Fathoms 1953 Lookalike Buying Guide: Top Brands Replica Watches

  • Movement: Seiko NH35, Miyota 9015, or a Chinese automatic. Some use a decorated rotor that copies Blancpain engraving.
  • Crystal: sapphire with anti-reflective coating. The 1953 original did not use sapphire.
  • Bezel: printed or ceramic insert. The lock is missing on most replicas.
  • Caseback: plain steel or a printed engraving.
  • Lume: Super-LumiNova on better examples, weak paint on cheap ones.

Checks before you buy

  1. Ask for the case measurement with calipers. Photos hide a 2 mm difference.
  2. Ask which movement. A named movement is a testable claim. Swiss movement is not.
  3. Check the bezel lock. If the listing claims a locking bezel and the photos show none, the listing is wrong.
  4. Ignore depth ratings. A replica is not pressure tested to ISO 6425. Do not dive with it.
  5. Compare the dial text. Font weight and spacing are the first things factories get wrong.

Water resistance and ISO 6425

ISO 6425 sets the standard for dive watches. It requires a 200 m minimum rating, a tested crown, and a tested bezel. A replica can print 300 m on a dial. That number is a claim, not a result. Get any replica pressure tested by a watchmaker before contact with water. Most replica gaskets fail a 100 m test.
