Short answer
Most Fifty Fathoms watches offered as 1953 originals are not 1953 originals. Blancpain built the first Fifty Fathoms in 1953 for French combat swimmers. Few survive with their original dial, bezel, and movement. Redials, assembled watches, and copies make up the rest of the market. Two checks catch most of them. A 1953 dial carries the moisture indicator at 6 o'clock. A 1953 bezel locks and must be pressed down before it turns. A bezel that spins free is not a 1953 bezel.

What the 1953 Fifty Fathoms Is
Blancpain introduced the model in 1953. Jean-Jacques Fiechter, then head of the company, led the design.

Fake Tells
Bezel
Press the bezel. It should drop, lock, and turn only while held down. Copies use a friction bezel that turns at a touch. This is the first tell to check and the hardest one to fake.
Moisture indicator
The 1953 dial places the moisture indicator at 6 o'clock. Many copies print a dot at 3 o'clock or skip it. Look at the dot with a loupe. A printed dot sits on the dial surface. An original indicator sits in a small aperture.
Case and crystal
Measure the case across the middle, crown excluded. A 39 mm or 45 mm case is not a 1953 case. The original crystal is domed acrylic. A flat sapphire crystal points to a modern build.
Dial and hands
Compare letter shapes with known examples. Radium lume from the 1950s has a dull cream tone and often cracks. Modern lume glows under a UV light. A dial that glows is a redial or a copy.
Movement and caseback
Ask for photos of the movement with the caseback off. Compare the rotor and bridge shapes with published examples of the same variant. Check the caseback engraving: depth, font, and number style. Shallow laser engraving is a modern sign.
Branding Variants
The Fifty Fathoms sold under more than one name. Blancpain sold it in Europe. Lip sold it in France. Tornek-Rayville built the TR-900 for the United States Navy. A dial logo that does not match the caseback and the serial range is a sign of a swap or a build.
Modern Replicas
Most replicas on sale now copy the 2003 revival, not the 1953 model. The modern Fifty Fathoms Automatique measures 45 mm across. Listings for these copies cite Miyota or ETA-type automatic movements, sapphire crystals, and ceramic bezel inserts. A 45 mm case with a sapphire bezel cannot be a 1953 original. Sellers still label them as vintage.
Checks Before You Buy
- Ask for movement photos with the caseback removed and a ruler in frame.
- Confirm the case diameter. Ask the seller to measure at 41 mm.
- Press the bezel. It should drop and lock.
- Find the moisture indicator. It sits at 6 o'clock on a 1953 dial.
- Match caseback numbers against published examples of the same variant.
- Pay an independent watchmaker to inspect the watch before money changes hands.
Auction Prices
Early Fifty Fathoms appear at Christie's and Phillips. Results depend on variant, dial condition, and provenance. Check recent sale results for the same reference before you bid. One high result does not set the price for every example.
Legal Note
Counterfeit watches are illegal to import into the United States. U.S. Customs and Border Protection can seize them. Buying a counterfeit is a different act from buying a genuine vintage watch with a replaced dial. Know which one you are buying.
