The Patek Philippe 3970 is a manual-wind perpetual calendar chronograph. Patek Philippe made it from 1986 to 2004 as the replacement for the reference 2499. The case measures 36 mm across. No genuine 3970 runs on a battery, and no genuine 3970 is an automatic. A watch with a quartz movement, or a calendar that needs a hand correction at the end of February, is a counterfeit.

What counterfeit 3970s get wrong
Most fakes copy the dial layout and skip the mechanics. A real 3970 tracks leap years on its own. The subdial at 3 o'clock holds a 30-minute counter and a small leap year hand. On a fake, that hand sits still or turns with the date. The font inside the day and month windows at 12 o'clock is another tell. Genuine printing is thin and sits inside a polished gold frame. Fake windows use stamped foil discs. The moonphase disc on a real watch is gold with a printed moon. Many fakes use a flat disc with a decal. Caseback engraving on a fake is shallow and the serial number does not match Patek Philippe records.
Check the movement
A genuine CH 27-70 Q is a hand-wound column wheel chronograph with a horizontal clutch. Finishing includes Geneva stripes on the bridges, perlage on the mainplate, chamfered edges, and polished steel parts. Fakes use a stock Seagull ST19, a Miyota automatic, or a quartz module. None of these carry a perpetual calendar. Some fakes add a decorative plate over a cheap movement with an engraved Patek Philippe name and a fake serial number. Ask for a photo of the movement with the caseback removed. Ask for the hallmarks inside the caseback: the Helvetia head, the gold purity mark, and the maker's mark.
Price gap
Fake 3970s sell for $100 to $800. Auction houses sell genuine examples for about $80,000 to more than $400,000, based on metal, dial variant, and condition. A complete 3970 offered under $10,000 is a counterfeit, a franken watch, or stolen goods.
Verification steps
- Wind the crown. A 3970 has no rotor and no automatic winding.
- Advance the date past February 28 in a non-leap year. A perpetual calendar jumps to March 1.
- Watch the leap year hand in the 3 o'clock subdial.
- Weigh the watch. A gold case weighs more than gold plating on brass.
- Request movement photos and an Extract from the Archives from Patek Philippe.
- Compare caseback engravings with archive photos of the same metal and year.
Franken watches
Some watches mix genuine parts with replacement parts. A real dial and movement in a non-Patek case is a franken watch. Auction houses reject these at authentication. Buy from auction houses, established dealers, or a private seller who supplies paperwork, and pay for an independent inspection before funds move.
