Short answer

The "1957 Speedmaster 3rd generation" means the Omega Speedmaster CK2915-3, the last of three CK2915 runs made between 1957 and 1959. A lookalike is any watch built to copy that look: a steel case near 39 mm, a steel tachymeter bezel marked Base 1000, a black three-register dial, a broad arrow hour hand, and a hand wound chronograph movement. Lookalikes come in three groups: Omega's own re-editions, homage watches from microbrands, and replicas that carry the Omega name. None of them use the calibre 321 movement or radium lume of the original.

What the CK2915-3 looks like

  • Case: stainless steel, about 39 mm across, screw-in caseback, no crown guards.
  • Bezel: stainless steel with an engraved decimal tachymeter scale marked Base 1000. Later Speedmasters moved to a black insert and a Base 500 scale.
  • Dial: black, three registers, luminous hour plots, OMEGA name at 12 o'clock.
  • Hands: broad arrow hour hand, straight minute hand, thin chronograph seconds hand.
  • Movement: calibre 321, a hand wound column wheel chronograph running at 18,000 vibrations per hour.

Omega's own history dates the Speedmaster line to 1957 and reference CK2915. Auction houses and collector press split the run into -1, -2 and -3 by bezel scale, dial text and caseback stamps.

What separates a lookalike from the real watch

  • Bezel: the original steel bezel carries Base 1000. Many copies print Base 500 or fit a black insert.
  • Dial print: font, spacing and the position of the word Speedmaster change across the three CK2915 runs. Copies reuse one generic dial.
  • Movement: no replica uses a calibre 321. Common substitutes are a Seagull ST19, a Miyota quartz module or a Chinese automatic chronograph.
  • Caseback: reference numbers, engraving depth and font.
  • Lume: original dials used radium, which ages to a brown tone. Modern copies use Super-LumiNova or no lume.

Omega re-editions

Omega has issued watches that echo 1957. The 2017 60th Anniversary trilogy ran at about 38.6 mm. The current Speedmaster '57 line uses broad arrow hands and a larger case. Both use modern movements and sapphire crystals, so proportions and weight differ from a CK2915.

Homage watches

Microbrands and low cost brands sell steel chronographs with broad arrow hands, a steel tachymeter bezel and a black dial. Prices run from about USD 80 to USD 400. Most use the Seagull ST19 hand wound chronograph, a column wheel design derived from the Venus 175, or a quartz module. Cases run 38 mm to 42 mm.

Replicas

Copies that carry Omega branding and logos exist. Accuracy varies by batch. Common faults: a printed tachymeter scale instead of engraved, wrong subdial spacing, short hour hand, and a display caseback that the original never had.

Checklist before buying a lookalike

  1. Measure the case. 39 mm is the target. Anything above 41 mm reads as a different watch.
  2. Check the bezel. Look for Base 1000 and engraved numerals.
  3. Ask which movement sits inside and confirm it is hand wound.
  4. Check the hour hand. Broad arrow, not baton and not pencil.
  5. Confirm subdials at 3, 6 and 9 o'clock and a running seconds at 9.

What is not known

Published sources disagree on exact production dates and serial cutoffs for the CK2915-1, -2 and -3. Omega has not released full production records. Treat any precise "3rd generation" cutoff as an estimate. Auction results for CK2915 examples have reached six figures in USD, so most buyers who want the look will be shopping homages or copies, not originals.
