Short answer

A replica Speedmaster automatic is a counterfeit Omega watch. It copies the look of an automatic Speedmaster reference, most often the Speedmaster Reduced ref 3510.50 or the Speedmaster Date ref 3513.50. The maker is not Omega. The movement is not an Omega caliber. Omega does not sell parts for these watches and does not service them.

The Moonwatch is manual wind. That means "Speedmaster automatic" points to a different line of watches with a smaller case and a different movement family.

Omega automatics that get copied

  • Speedmaster Reduced, ref 3510.50. Case 38.5 mm. Caliber 3220. Sold from 1988 to 2009.
  • Speedmaster Date, ref 3513.50. Case 39 mm. Automatic chronograph.
  • Speedmaster 38, ref 324.30.38.50.01.001. Case 38 mm. Caliber 3330, automatic with a Co-Axial escapement.

The caliber 3220 pairs an ETA 2892-A2 base with a Dubois-Depraz chronograph module. The module adds thickness and changes the pusher feel. That is one reason the Reduced sits and feels unlike a Moonwatch on the wrist.

Movements found in copies

  1. Asian copies of the ETA 2824-2 or 2836-2. 28,800 vph. Power reserve near 38 hours.
  2. Seagull ST19 or ST21 family from Tianjin. Some are manual wind.
  3. Battery quartz. Sub-dials may be fixed and print no elapsed time.

A quartz copy has no rotor. A copy with an ETA clone has a rotor, but no Omega finish and no Omega caliber number. Caseback engraving on copies comes from a photo of a real watch, so serial numbers repeat across a batch.

Build details to compare

Genuine Speedmaster Reduced cases use 316L stainless steel, a solid steel caseback, and a sapphire crystal. The ref 3510.50 has a solid back, so a copy sold with a display back is the wrong case. Water resistance marks on counterfeit casebacks are printed and never pressure tested. Bracelet end links on copies often show gaps at the lugs. Dial text on copies can sit off center or use the wrong font weight on the "Omega" and "Speedmaster" lines.

Price and legal status

Copies sell from about $40 to $500. Used genuine Speedmaster Reduced prices move with condition, box, and papers. Under 19 U.S.C. § 1526, U.S. Customs and Border Protection can seize counterfeit watches at import. Trafficking in counterfeit goods is a crime under 18 U.S.C. § 2320, and the trademark owner can file a civil suit under the Lanham Act. A counterfeit watch carries no factory warranty and no service support.

Checks that separate a copy from a real watch

  • Case size. 38.5 mm on the Reduced. 42 mm is the Moonwatch case.
  • Caseback. Solid steel on ref 3510.50. A display back is a mismatch.
  • Serial number. Repeated numbers across listings point to one batch.
  • Crystal. Mineral glass scratches. Sapphire resists scratches.
  • Service. Omega service centers refuse counterfeit watches.
  • Price. A $200 price on an automatic Speedmaster is not a market price.
