What a replica Radiomir Composite is

A replica Radiomir Composite is a copy of Panerai's Radiomir cushion case finished in the brand's Composite material. Panerai's Composite is aluminum with a ceramic layer grown from the surface by plasma electrolytic oxidation. The coating is matte brown. Original cases measure 47 mm. Replica builds copy the case shape, the wire lugs, the onion crown, and the sandwich dial. They do not use the same alloy or the same coating process. Most use coated steel or plain aluminum, plus a generic hand-wound movement.

The original material

Panerai introduced Composite in 2015 on Radiomir references, including a 3 Days model and an 8 Giorni Marina Militare model. The base metal is aluminum. Plasma electrolytic oxidation converts the outer layer into ceramic oxide. The result is a brown, non-reflective surface that weighs less than a steel case of the same size. Panerai's catalog lists the reference numbers by year. Confirm the number on Panerai's site before you compare any spec sheet.

What replica versions change

  • Case: 316L steel or aluminum with paint, PVD, or DLC coating. Not PEO-treated aluminum.
  • Movement: Seagull ST36 or a decorated Asian clone. Not an in-house P.3000 or P.2002.
  • Crystal: sapphire on mid and top tiers, mineral glass on entry builds.
  • Water resistance: often listed at 100 m. No independent test. Keep it out of water.
  • Dial: font weight and lume duration differ from the original. Lume fades in a few hours.

Price tiers

Listings fall into three groups. Entry builds sit under $100 and use mineral glass. Mid tier runs about $150 to $300 with sapphire and a decorated movement. Top tier runs about $300 to $700 and gets closer on case dimensions and dial printing. No tier matches the original material, movement, or finishing.

Legal status in the United States

Counterfeit watches infringe trademarks. Under 19 U.S.C. 1526 and the Lanham Act, Customs and Border Protection can seize and destroy counterfeit imports. Personal possession carries less exposure than resale. Import and resale both carry risk. Some countries treat possession for resale as a criminal matter.

Questions to ask a seller

  1. Case diameter and lug-to-lug measurement in millimeters.
  2. Movement name and power reserve in hours.
  3. Photos of the caseback, crown, and wire lugs.
  4. Crystal material: sapphire or mineral.

Discard claims of "1:1" or "Swiss made." Swiss law limits the Swiss made label to watches that meet movement and assembly rules. A replica cannot meet them.
