Short answer
A replica Patek Philippe Sky Moon Tourbillon is a cosmetic copy of reference 6002G. It copies the case shape, the two-face layout and the engraving pattern. It does not contain a minute repeater, a tourbillon or a working celestial chart. Prices run about $300 to $1,200.
What the original is
Patek Philippe launched the Sky Moon Tourbillon as reference 5002 in 2001. Reference 6002 followed in 2014. The 6002G uses white gold, hand-engraved surfaces and a champlevé enamel dial. Patek lists 12 complications. These include a minute repeater, a tourbillon, a perpetual calendar, a retrograde date and a sky chart on the reverse face. Auction results for the 6002G pass $1 million.
What replicas get right
- Case shape and diameter, about 43 mm
- Two-face layout with a reverse dial
- Printed star chart and moon phase graphic
- Engraved case bands on higher-priced units
- Sapphire crystal on the top grade
What replicas do not do
No copy in the current market runs a minute repeater. Hammers and gongs on these watches are decoration. The tourbillon is absent or replaced by an open aperture. The celestial chart on the reverse is a print. On the original, that disc turns with sidereal time and tracks the night sky. Copies keep the disc still. The moon phase window shows a painted moon that does not follow the lunar cycle.
Movements and materials
Most copies run a Chinese automatic or hand-wind movement with a decorated rotor and fake bridges. Sellers call these Swiss or clone movements. A Swiss-made movement is rare in this price band. Cases are 316L stainless steel. Many units carry gold plating that wears at the lugs and caseback edges. Claimed solid gold cases are hard to verify.
Price bands
- $80 to $250: single dial, printed graphics, quartz or basic automatic
- $300 to $700: dual dial, better case finish, automatic movement
- $800 to $1,200: engraved case, sapphire crystal, decorated movement
A seller who asks $3,000 or more for a Sky Moon copy should name the functions that work. In most cases, none of the grand complications work. Steel copies also weigh less than the white gold original at the same size.
Checks before buying
- Ask if the repeater slide chimes. Most sellers say the part is decorative.
- Ask for video of the reverse dial in motion. A print does not move.
- Look at the caseback engraving. Laser etching is shallow and flat.
- Compare the crown position and pusher count against reference photos.
Legal status in the US
Counterfeit watches are illegal to import and to sell in the United States. Trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. § 2320. U.S. Customs and Border Protection can seize and destroy shipments at the port. Buying a copy for personal use carries less legal risk than selling, but the item can still be taken at the border.
Bottom line
A Sky Moon replica is a visual stand-in. It shows the shape and the two dials. It does not show the watchmaking. Buyers who want the functions will not find them in a copy.
