Short answer

Master Control is a watch line made by Jaeger-LeCoultre, a Swiss manufacturer based in Le Sentier. The line launched in 1992 and carries the 1000 Hours Control designation, a test protocol the company runs on the cased watch. A replica Master Control copies the look of that watch. Jaeger-LeCoultre does not make it. Under US law it is a counterfeit good, not a grey-market or pre-owned original.

Price gap

Genuine Master Control models sell at retail from about $7,000 to more than $30,000, set by metal, size, and complication. References in the line include the Master Control Date, Master Control Calendar, Master Control Chronograph Calendar, and Master Control Memovox. Replicas sell for about $80 to $600. The gap tracks the movement. A genuine watch uses an in-house JLC caliber, for example the 899 or the 759. A replica uses a third-party movement, often a Chinese automatic, sometimes with a decorated rotor that mimics Geneva stripes.

Points that separate the two

  • Caseback text. Genuine 1000 Hours Control engraving is cut into the metal with even depth and spacing. Replica engraving is shallow, or printed on a plate.
  • Dial print. Check index alignment with the chapter ring, date wheel font, and the shape of the applied logo. Replica date fonts run wide and sit off center.
  • Movement finish. Screws, jewel settings, and perlage on a genuine caliber show hand work. Cloned movements show stamped bridges and a rotor weight that reads light.
  • Weight and feel. Steel cases carry heft that matches dimensions. Thin cases with full weight are a sign of a plated brass or alloy body.
  • Papers and serial. Genuine watches ship with a numbered certificate and a matching case number. Replica sets use reused numbers.

Legal status in the US

18 U.S.C. 2320 makes trafficking in counterfeit goods a federal crime. Penalties reach 10 years for a first offense and 20 years for repeat offenses, plus fines. US Customs and Border Protection can seize shipments and destroy them. Buyers can face seizure of the item with no refund from the seller, and card networks treat the sale as a prohibited transaction.

Service and resale

Jaeger-LeCoultre will not service a counterfeit and will not supply parts for it. Independent watchmakers can replace a generic movement but cannot source genuine case parts. Resale value is close to zero. No auction house and no authorized dealer will take one.

What is not known

Replica production changes by batch and by factory. No fixed list of tells covers every copy, and no public registry tracks which movement sits in which case.
