Quick answer

Luminor 1950 77 is not a Panerai reference number. Officine Panerai catalogs the Luminor 1950 as a case family and sells it under PAM references such as PAM 127, PAM 372 and PAM 422. The number 77 in a listing is a seller SKU or an internal model code in most cases. Ask the seller which PAM number the watch copies before you compare specs.

What the Luminor 1950 case is

The 1950 case is a cushion-shaped block with a rounded bezel and a bridge that clamps the crown. Panerai lists two sizes in the family: 44 mm and 47 mm. Thickness runs from 15 mm to 18 mm, set by the movement inside. Genuine models carry 100 m or 300 m water resistance ratings.

  • Lugs: integrated and drilled. Strap width is 26 mm on 47 mm cases, 24 mm on 44 mm cases.
  • Crystal: sapphire on genuine references, 3 mm to 3.5 mm thick.
  • Dial: sandwich construction on most references. Two plates. Luminous compound sits in the lower plate. The upper plate is cut to form the numerals and markers.

Movements in replicas

Genuine hand-wound Luminor 1950 models use the OP I, an ETA/Unitas 6497 base at 21,600 vph, or the in-house P.3000 at 21,600 vph with a 72-hour reserve. Automatic references use the OP III, an ETA 7750 base, or the P.9000. Replicas copy the case and dial first and the movement last. Three tiers exist.

  1. Mineral glass, printed dial, bare Asian clone at 21,600 vph.
  2. Sapphire glass, sandwich dial, clone with engraved bridges and rotor decoration.
  3. Copies built on a real ETA 6497-1 or a finished clone. These cost the most.

Beat rate is the fastest check. Set the watch against a timegrapher app. 21,600 vph equals 6 beats per second, which reads as 6 ticks. 28,800 vph reads as 8 ticks. A watch sold as a P.3000 copy that beats at 28,800 vph does not match that caliber.

Checks before purchase

  • Case-back engraving. Genuine PAM numbers, OP logos and REG. T.M. text are crisp with shallow cuts. Stamped or laser-etched text with soft edges points to a low tier.
  • Crown bridge. The lever should snap and hold under spring tension. Loose levers are a defect on low-tier copies.
  • Dial text. Font weight and spacing on LUMINOR and PANERAI vary between factories. Compare against a photo of the reference you are buying.
  • Dimensions. Measure with calipers. A 47 mm case that measures 45.5 mm is not a 47 mm case.
  • Serial and reference. Genuine cases pair a PAM number with a case serial. Mismatched or missing numbers appear on replicas.

Legal note

Selling counterfeit watches is illegal in the United States under 18 U.S.C. 2320. U.S. Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit goods at import. Buyers of counterfeits risk seizure and loss of payment. Trade in genuine pre-owned Panerai is legal.
