Short answer
IW544728 is an IWC reference. The 5447 block covers the Portugieser Tourbillon Hand-Wound, a 43 mm hand-wound watch with a flying tourbillon at 9 o'clock. Replicas of this reference sell for about $300 to $1,200. Cheap copies use a standard hand-wound movement behind a decorative cage. Expensive copies use a real Chinese tourbillon that turns once per minute. Neither matches the parts or the finishing of the original. IWC will not service them, and US Customs can seize them. Spec sheets for the exact 544728 variant are not published in the sources used here, so confirm case metal and dial with an authorized dealer.
What the reference is
IWC groups references in blocks. The 5447 block sits in the Portugieser line. Published data for the block:
- Case diameter: 43 mm
- Movement: hand-wound, in-house, one-minute flying tourbillon
- Power reserve: 96 hours
- Case metal: rose gold, white gold or platinum, by variant
- Crystal: sapphire, front and back
- Strap: alligator leather, pin or folding clasp
IWC changes dials, metals and suffixes inside one block. Two watches can share the first four digits and differ in price by $20,000.
What replicas get right
- Case diameter and lug shape. Most copies measure 43 mm to 43.5 mm.
- Dial layout: tourbillon aperture at 9, printed indices, railway minute track.
- Strap width: 22 mm on most copies.
- Caseback text. Laser etching copies the wording, but the cut is shallow.
Where replicas fail
- Movement. A Chinese tourbillon runs at 21,600 vph. The cage wobbles. Timing machine traces show it.
- Finishing. Bevels are machine polished. Steel parts get no black polish.
- Power reserve. Copies run 40 to 55 hours, not 96.
- Weight. Gold weighs more than steel. A steel copy feels light for a 43 mm case.
- Water resistance. Test data is unknown. Do not swim with a copy.
Price bands
- $300 to $500: steel case, plated finish, standard movement, fake cage.
- $600 to $900: real tourbillon, sapphire on both sides, better dial print.
- $1,000 to $1,200: engraved bridges, gold plating, closer case geometry.
Checks before you pay
- Time the cage. One full turn takes 60 seconds. Anything else is not a tourbillon.
- Inspect dial print with a 10x loupe. Edges should be sharp.
- Turn the crown. Hand-wound movements should feel smooth, with no grinding.
- Ask for photos of the caseback threads and the movement bridge.
- Get the return window in writing.
Legal and service notes
Importing a counterfeit watch into the United States breaks 19 U.S.C. § 1526. CBP can seize the parcel and destroy it. The buyer loses the money. IWC will not service a copy, and watchmakers do not stock parts for a Chinese tourbillon. Resale value is near zero. For the Portugieser tourbillon, the secondhand market is the honest path, and the price is a multiple of any replica listed here.
