Replica IW371784 watches sell in three price bands: about $120 to $200, $250 to $400, and $450 and above. All three copy the same dial layout. The gaps sit in the movement, the case finishing, and the printing on the dial.
What the IW371784 is
The IW371784 is an IWC reference in the 3717 series, a line of automatic chronographs sold from about 2006 to 2012. Full factory spec sheets for this exact number are not public, so the figures below come from the series and from dealer listings.
- Case: stainless steel, about 42 mm across, about 15 mm thick.
- Movement: IWC calibre 79320, built on a Valjoux 7750 base. Automatic, about 44 hours of power reserve.
- Dial layout: small seconds at 9, 30-minute counter at 12, 12-hour counter at 6, day and date at 3.
- Crystal: sapphire with antireflective coating.
- Water resistance: 60 m on the original. Treat a replica as not water resistant.
Movement inside replicas
Most replicas run an Asian 7750. It copies the same architecture IWC uses, so the subdial spacing lines up with the case and the pushers sit in the right place. Two versions circulate: a 21,600 vph low beat and a 28,800 vph high beat. The high beat costs more and holds time better. Ask the seller which one is fitted before payment.
Quartz versions exist at the bottom of the market. A quartz chronograph ticks once per second and the chronograph hand jumps in one-second steps. Skip those.
Checks before you pay
- Dial print. The IWC lettering is crisp and sits level. Blurry or raised text is a sign of a low tier build.
- Subdial spacing. The 30-minute counter at 12 and the 12-hour counter at 6 should sit close to the center. Wide spacing means a quartz or a small movement in a large case.
- Date window. The day and date discs should center in the aperture with no gap at the top.
- Chronograph reset. Start, stop, and reset the chronograph. The hands should return to 12 and stay there.
- Caseback. Look for the reference number, the case material, and the serial. Engraving depth varies by factory.
- Weight. A 42 mm steel watch on a leather strap weighs about 80 to 110 g. A watch far below that range has a thin case.
Cost and service
An Asian 7750 service runs $80 to $150 at an independent watchmaker. Parts for the clone can be hard to source. Many owners replace the movement instead of repairing it, which costs $60 to $120 for the unit. Budget for that before you buy.
What a replica does not copy
The original has a soft iron inner case that shields the movement from magnetism. Most replicas leave it out. Movement finishing differs, resale value is near zero, and there is no factory warranty. The original also carries a documented service history.
Buying notes
Ask for a photo of the caseback, a video of the chronograph running, and the measured case diameter. Sellers who list weight, thickness, and movement version in the ad are easier to check. If the seller cannot name the movement, assume a quartz build.
