Short answer
A replica Clé de Cartier automatic is an unlicensed copy of a Cartier watch. Cartier does not make it and does not sell it. In the US, importing, selling, or trafficking counterfeit goods violates 18 U.S.C. Section 2320. A first offense carries up to 10 years in prison and a $2,000,000 fine for an individual. Buying one for personal use is a different matter, but US Customs and Border Protection can seize the shipment, and the buyer loses the money paid.
The genuine watch
Cartier introduced the Clé de Cartier in 2015. The name comes from the crown, shaped like a key. Clé is French for key. Automatic versions run the Caliber 1847 MC, an in-house movement with 23 jewels, 28,800 vibrations per hour, and a 48-hour power reserve. Case sizes were 31mm, 35mm, 40mm, and 41mm. Steel models retailed near $5,000 to $6,700. Gold and two-tone versions ran from about $13,000 to above $30,000. Cartier does not list the line in its current core collection, so most pieces now trade pre-owned. I cannot verify current production status.
What replica listings often claim
- Swiss made or Swiss movement claims go unverified. Customs seizures and watchmaker teardowns often find movements from Chinese factories such as Sea-Gull or Hangzhou, or generic cloned ETA designs.
- Case metal is often 316L steel with gold plating measured in microns. Genuine pieces use 18k gold or solid steel.
- Serial and reference numbers are copied from real watches. That copying is the core trademark and copyright problem.
- No maker warranty exists. Cartier service centers do not accept counterfeit pieces, and many independent watchmakers refuse them because parts cannot be sourced.
Resale and legal risk
Resale carries the heaviest exposure. US law targets trafficking: selling, transferring, or attempting to sell. Penalties scale with the number of items. CBP seizes counterfeit shipments at the border with no compensation to buyer or seller. Online marketplaces delist listings and can pass seller data to rights holders.
Alternatives
For a key-shaped crown look at a lower price, options include pre-owned genuine Cartier Tank or Santos models, or non-infringing designs from Seiko, Tissot, or Hamilton. Pre-owned Cartier steel watches sell between $2,500 and $5,000.
