Blancpain Villeret replica watches are copies of Blancpain's dress line. The line takes its name from Villeret, the Swiss village in the Jura where Jehan-Jacques Blancpain began watchmaking in 1735. Genuine Villeret models sell from about $10,500 to more than $100,000. Replicas sell from about $70 to $700. A replica is not a factory second and not an overstock item. It is a separate watch that copies a design and carries a counterfeit trademark. Steel grade, movement, dial printing, and case thickness separate the two.
Which Villeret references get copied
The copies track the best known references.
- 6651: 40 mm, three hands, date at 3 o'clock.
- 6223: 38 mm, small seconds.
- 6654: 40 mm, complete calendar with moon phase.
- 6606: manual wind, small seconds, power reserve at 9 o'clock.
- 6653: quantieme with moon phase.
The 6654 is the difficult one. The genuine watch uses calibre 6654, which drives a full calendar module. Many replicas print the calendar and the moon phase on the dial. Those subdials do not advance.
Movement inside a replica
Genuine three-hand Villeret models use calibre 1150. It is automatic, it runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour, and it holds a 100-hour power reserve. Replicas in this class use a Seagull ST2130 or a Hangzhou 6-series copy of the ETA 2824-2. Power reserve is 38 to 42 hours. Beat rate is the same 28,800 vph. The date on a genuine 1150 snaps at midnight. Clones drag the date over 20 to 40 minutes. Case thickness is the clearest tell. A genuine 6651 measures 8.7 mm. Most copies measure 10.5 mm to 11.5 mm.
Grades and price bands
- $70 to $120: mineral glass, stamped dial, chrome plated bezel, 316L steel.
- $150 to $300: sapphire crystal, better dial print, decorated rotor.
- $350 to $700: sellers use the term super clone, claim 904L steel, and engrave the movement plates.
No grade makes the watch genuine. Replicas have no Blancpain warranty, no service through Blancpain, and no resale value.
US law and customs
Counterfeit watches are illegal to import into the United States. 19 U.S.C. 1526 bars import of goods that carry a counterfeit trademark. U.S. Customs and Border Protection can seize and destroy a shipment. Trafficking in counterfeit goods is a felony under 18 U.S.C. 2320, with a maximum of 10 years for a first offense and 20 years for a second. A single personal purchase carries less risk than resale, but the watch can still be seized. There is no refund and no appeal.
How to check a listing
- Ask the seller to name the movement and the power reserve figure.
- Ask for case thickness in millimeters and compare it to the genuine specification.
- Ask for a photo of the case back with the movement visible.
- Ask for the crystal material: sapphire or mineral glass.
- Compare the date font and the logo. Genuine Villeret dials use thin serif lettering. Copies use wider fonts.
