Short answer

A replica Audemars Piguet steel watch is a counterfeit copy of a steel Audemars Piguet model, in most cases a Royal Oak. Prices run from about $80 for a quartz version to $900 or more for a 41 mm automatic with a decorated movement. No replica comes from Audemars Piguet. Import and sale are illegal in the United States under 18 U.S.C. 2320 and 19 U.S.C. 1526.

Which real models get copied

Three Royal Oak references account for most of the market.

  • 15202ST Jumbo: 39 mm, 8.1 mm thick, caliber 2121, steel bracelet.
  • 15500ST: 41 mm, caliber 4302, produced 2019 to 2022.
  • 16202ST: 41 mm, caliber 7121, launched in 2022 for the 50th anniversary of the Royal Oak.

Offshore models appear less. The 42 mm Offshore chronograph uses a larger case and a rubber strap, so a maker has less bracelet finishing to match.

Case and bracelet

Low tiers use 316L stainless steel. High tiers claim 904L. The bracelet is the weak part. Replica center links are stamped, not milled, and the taper from the case to the clasp differs from the original. Screw heads on the bezel show shallow slots and burrs.

Movements

Four movement families show up in steel replicas: Miyota 9015 from Japan, Seagull ST2130 from China, the Hangzhou 6460 as an ETA 2824 clone, and a Chinese copy of the AP 2121 built for thin cases. The Miyota 9015 runs at 28,800 vph and holds 42 hours of power reserve. Rate accuracy lands near plus or minus 20 seconds per day out of the box. A watchmaker can regulate it to plus or minus 10 seconds per day.

Thickness and weight

The 15202 is 8.1 mm thick. Replicas of that reference measure 8.5 mm to 9.5 mm. A replica on a full bracelet weighs 10 g to 25 g less than the original because links are hollow.

Water resistance

Listings state 50 m. Samples fail pressure tests below 3 atm. Gaskets are the cause. No seller warranty covers water damage, and a flooded movement is a total loss.

Legal status in the US

Counterfeit watches are illegal to import, sell, or traffic. US Customs and Border Protection seizes shipments and destroys the goods. There is no refund from customs and no recourse against the seller. Trademark owners can also file civil suits under 15 U.S.C. 1114.

Checks on a watch in hand

  • Case back engraving depth and font.
  • Bezel screw slot depth and burr on the head.
  • Date wheel font and window position.
  • Timegrapher reading: beat rate, amplitude, rate error.

Resale

Replicas sell at a loss. Most watch forums and marketplaces ban counterfeit listings, so a buyer has no formal channel to resell.
