Short answer
They answer different questions. The Speedmaster is a chronograph built to be read at a glance and worn all day. The Planet Ocean Ultra Deep is a diver's tool built to survive 6,000 m of water pressure. When people search these two names together, it is usually because both are Omegas at a similar price point, not because they do the same job.
Why the Ultra Deep exists at all
In 2019 Omega sealed a prototype case to Victor Vescovo's submersible and it went down to 10,928 m in the Mariana Trench. The retail version that followed is rated to 6,000 m, which is already deeper than any dive a person will make outside a research vessel. The number is the point. It is proof of engineering, the same way a 300 m dive watch is proof of intent rather than need.
What that number costs you on the wrist: about 45.5 mm across, roughly 18 mm thick, and a case that sits tall. Grade 5 titanium keeps the weight down, but the bulk is still there. The crown guards are huge, the lugs are short, and the whole thing reads as equipment.

Why the Speedmaster is the opposite
- 42 mm case, around 13.5 mm thick, so it slides under a cuff
- Manual-wind Calibre 3861, Co-Axial, Master Chronometer certified
- Tachymeter bezel instead of a dive bezel
- 50 m water resistance. That is the whole rating. Do not take it diving.
The Moonwatch is a 1960s design that got a careful update. It is a bracelet watch for people who like looking at their wrist.
What this means when you buy a replica
The two are not equally hard to copy. A Speedmaster replica lives or dies on the dial: subdial spacing, stepped pushers, applied logo, the weight of the printing. Get those wrong and it is visible from a metre away.
The Ultra Deep is judged on the case. Thickness, bezel action, the edge of the ceramic insert, the titanium finish, and whether the crown guards look machined or moulded. Large flat surfaces hide flaws, so weak versions often photograph better than they feel in your hand.
I check three things first: how the caseback sits flush, how the lume is applied to the indices, and whether the end links move without rattling.
Which one to pick
- Daily wear, office, smaller wrists: Speedmaster.
- Beach, boat, large wrists, liking chunky gear: Ultra Deep.
- Want a conversation piece: Ultra Deep. The depth rating is the story.
- Want something that never looks out of place: Speedmaster.
Neither is the better watch. One is a stopwatch you can live in. The other is a pressure vessel you can wear.
