Fake Vacheron Constantin 3200: the short answer
A watch sold as a "Vacheron Constantin 3200" is a counterfeit. Vacheron Constantin does not publish a current caliber numbered 3200, and no current reference in its catalog uses that four digit form by itself. Real references look like 4500V/110A-B128 or 81180/000R-9159, with the case material and dial code attached. When a seller uses a number that does not match a published reference, that number is a sales label. Confirm the reference and the serial with Vacheron Constantin before you pay.
What the label 3200 hides
Marketplace titles attach numbers to replicas for search traffic. The same watch turns up as a 3200, a Patrimony, and an Overseas in three separate listings. Ask the seller for two items: the reference stamped on the caseback and the movement serial. A genuine Vacheron Constantin carries both. A replica carries an engraving that copies the shape of the characters but not the depth or the spacing. A photo at 10x magnification shows the difference in the cut.
Movement checks a photo will not pass
Replica makers install generic automatic movements and finish them to look Swiss. Two checks fail on most of them.
- Geneva Seal. The Poincon de Geneve requires the movement to be made, assembled, and adjusted in the canton of Geneva. Fake movements engrave the seal without meeting the rule. A real seal is struck into the bridge with a clean edge, not printed or laser etched.
- Bevels and jewels. Genuine Vacheron Constantin anglage is cut and polished by hand, so the bridge edge shows a flat plane with a mirror line at the turn. On a fake the bevel is a stamped edge with a single bright stripe. Replica movements use 21 to 25 jewels and stamped decoration under the rotor.
Case, dial, and weight
Fake cases run 0.3 mm to 1 mm thicker than the original because the movement inside needs more room. Weight gives away gold models. Density for 18k white gold is about 15.5 g/cm3 and for steel about 7.9 g/cm3, so a plated copy of a gold watch lands near 150 g where the real piece sits near 200 g on a bracelet. On the dial, check the accent on the word Geneve and the date window alignment. Replica printing blurs at 5x and the date sits off center in the aperture.
Papers, box, and price
New Vacheron Constantin watches start above $20,000 at retail. Used steel Overseas models trade near $15,000 and up. Replica prices run from $150 to $900, and a gold model under $5,000 is plated metal. Boxes and papers come from the same workshops that build the watches, so documents prove nothing by themselves. Ask for the original invoice.
Steps before you buy
- Write down the reference and serial the seller quotes.
- Call Vacheron Constantin or a watchmaker who holds a brand account.
- Request a movement photo at 10x with the caseback open.
- Have an independent watchmaker time the movement on a machine.
- Walk away if the seller refuses any of the four steps.
In the US, trafficking in counterfeit goods falls under 18 U.S.C. 2320, with fines up to $2,000,000 and up to 10 years for a first offense by an individual. US Customs and Border Protection can seize counterfeit shipments. If the reference number cannot be verified with the manufacturer, the answer is no.
