Short answer
A fake Rolex steel watch is a replica of a Rolex model with a stainless steel case and bracelet. Rolex makes its steel in house and calls it Oystersteel, a 904L grade of stainless steel. The copied models are the steel ones: Submariner, Datejust, GMT-Master II, Explorer, Oyster Perpetual, Air-King, Sea-Dweller and Deepsea. Copies sell from about $20 to about $600. In the United States, selling one is a federal crime. Possession for personal use is not covered by 18 U.S.C. 2320, but CBP can seize the shipment at the border.
Steel Rolex models that get copied
Rolex builds one reference in several sizes. Replica makers follow the sizes, dial colors and bezel types.
- Submariner Date 41 mm, black or green bezel
- Submariner 41 mm, no date
- Datejust 36 mm and 41 mm, fluted or smooth bezel
- GMT-Master II 40 mm, Pepsi, Batman, Sprite
- Explorer 36 mm and 40 mm
- Oyster Perpetual 28, 31, 34, 36 and 41 mm
- Air-King 40 mm
- Sea-Dweller 43 mm and Deepsea 44 mm
Steel grades
Most replicas use 316L stainless steel. A smaller share use 904L, or a steel sold as 904L. Grade 904L holds a polish longer and resists salt water corrosion. Grade 316L is softer. Bracelet construction shows in the weight. A Submariner 41 mm with a full bracelet weighs about 155 g. Hollow-link copies come in below that.
Movements
Replica movements fall into three groups.
- Quartz. One tick per second. Common under $60.
- Clones of the ETA 2824 and the Seiko NH35. The 2824 runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour and the NH35 at 21,600. Power reserve is about 38 to 41 hours.
- Clones of the Rolex 3135 and 3235. 28,800 vibrations per hour. Decoration plates copy the Rolex finish.
Price tiers
- $20 to $80: quartz or low-grade automatic, mineral glass, stamped clasp
- $100 to $250: automatic, 316L case, sapphire crystal on some listings
- $300 to $600: 904L steel on some, ceramic bezel insert, cloned movement, box and papers
There is no published price index for replica watches. These ranges come from listing prices.
US law
18 U.S.C. 2320 covers trafficking in counterfeit goods. A first offense carries up to 10 years in prison. A repeat offense carries up to 20 years. The statute targets sellers and importers, not buyers. CBP seizes goods that carry a counterfeit mark at US ports. Rolex holds US trademark registrations on its name, crown logo and model names, so the brand can ask CBP to detain a shipment.
Checks that separate a steel Rolex from a copy
- Case back. Every current Rolex has a solid case back. A see-through back on a Submariner or Datejust is a copy.
- Second hand. 28,800 vibrations per hour gives 8 beats per second. A quartz copy ticks once per second.
- Cyclops. The date magnifier on a Rolex runs about 2.5x. On many copies it runs lower and the date sits off center.
- Weight. Rolex steel cases and bracelets are solid. A 41 mm Submariner weighs about 155 g.
- Rehaut. The inner ring between the crystal and the dial carries the repeated ROLEX name. Copies engrave it shallow or leave it blank.
Buying risks
Seizure at customs means the buyer loses the payment in most cases. Card networks block counterfeit sales, so sellers ask for bank transfer, gift cards or crypto. None of those carry a chargeback. Service is the second problem. A watchmaker can service an ETA 2824 clone or a Seiko NH movement. Rolex clone parts do not come from an open supply chain.
What is not known
Rolex does not publish production totals. No public count exists for replica steel watches sold per year. CBP seizure data covers intercepted shipments only, not the volume that reaches buyers.
