The short answer
The Rolex Daytona Rainbow is a gem-set chronograph, and a fake one is a lookalike built around a rainbow bezel of colored stones. The gap between a cheap version and a good one is enormous, and it shows up first in the bezel, then in the case proportions, and only later in the movement. Buying one in the United States also puts you on the wrong side of trademark law, and that part is not a technicality.

If you want the short version: the bezel is where almost every fake falls apart, the case is where most buyers get fooled, and the paperwork is where the real risk lives.
What the genuine watch is
Rolex released the Everose gold Rainbow Daytona in 2018 as reference 116595RBOW. The bezel carries 36 baguette-cut sapphires in a graded color sequence, and the lugs and crown guards hold more of the same stones. Earlier versions existed in yellow gold (116598RBOW, 2012) and white gold (116599RBOW). Production numbers are small and secondary prices are high, which is exactly why the replica market latched onto it.
Fake Rolex Daytona Rainbow Synonym
Two details matter for judging a copy. The stones are sapphires, not glass and not cubic zirconia. And the color sequence runs in a deliberate order around the bezel, moving through the spectrum with no repeats in the wrong place.

Why the rainbow bezel is so hard to copy
Setting 36 baguette stones takes a jeweler with steady hands, and a factory churning out copies does not have that. I look at four things before anything else:
- Color order. Track the gradient with your eye from the 12 o'clock stone all the way around. A wrong stone, a muddy transition, or a repeat will jump out.
- Stone cut. Baguettes should be crisp rectangles with sharp ends. Rounded corners and cloudy bodies mean glass or low-grade synthetic.
- Setting evenness. Look for gaps between stones, uneven prongs, and stones sitting at slightly different heights. That is the tell.
- Bezel profile. The real bezel is thin and sits close to the crystal. Many fakes run thick and slab-sided.
Under a loupe, cheap stones show bubbles and swirl marks. Synthetic sapphire is fine in principle, but the cheap stuff is often dyed and fades.
Case, dial, and movement
The Daytona case has a specific curve at the lugs and a pusher profile that is easy to get wrong. A quick check is the subdial spacing: a 7750-based copy spaces the registers differently than the real 4130 layout, and the case gets thicker to swallow the movement. On the wrist, thickness is the giveaway. Weight is the other one, since solid gold has heft that gold plating never will. Plating also wears at the corners and on the caseback edges, and it turns a slightly different color over time.
Dial printing on the good copies is clean enough to pass a photo. Hands, indices, and the applied crown logo are where you spot lazy work.
The tiers you will run into
- Decorative tier. Glass stones, printed or glued bezel inserts, plated brass case. Looks fine in a thumbnail and bad in daylight.
- Middle tier. Synthetic stones in a proper setting, steel case with plating, clone movement. Bezel color order is usually off somewhere.
- Top tier. Graded synthetic or lab sapphire, hand-set bezel, closer case geometry, better movement. Costs several hundred dollars and still is not a sapphire-bezel Rolex.
None of them will survive a watchmaker's bench or a service. Parts are not interchangeable with genuine components, and no authorized service center will touch one.
The legal reality in the US
Counterfeit watches infringe Rolex trademarks. Importing, selling, or trafficking in them can bring civil liability and, under 18 U.S.C. § 2320, criminal exposure. Customs seizes counterfeit shipments at the border on a routine basis, and a package can disappear with no refund from the seller. Resale is close to impossible, and passing one off as genuine is fraud on top of everything else.
So treat it as what it is: a costume piece with real legal baggage. If the look is what you want, buy it knowing the bezel will be the first thing anyone who knows watches examines, and that the money is gone the moment it arrives.
