Answer first
A fake Rolex Day-Date 128347 is a copy of a solid gold Rolex Day-Date 36. No replica uses an 18k gold case, a Rolex calibre 3255, or a Rolex-made President bracelet. Those three parts carry most of the cost of the real watch. A replica replaces each one with a cheaper substitute, and each substitute leaves a mark you can check in daylight.
Confirm the reference number first
Rolex lists the Day-Date 36 under 128xxx references, including 128238 in yellow gold, 128239 in white gold and 128235 in Everose gold. The 128347 code appears in resale and replica listings. Rolex catalogue pages do not show that number as plain text. Ask a Rolex dealer to confirm the reference before you compare specs. A wrong reference makes every later check pointless.
Real specs to compare against
- Case: 36 mm Oyster case in 18k yellow, white or Everose gold, or platinum 950.
- Movement: calibre 3255, automatic, 70-hour power reserve, 28,800 vph.
- Accuracy: Superlative Chronometer, minus 2 to plus 2 seconds per day after casing.
- Crystal: sapphire with a Cyclops lens over the date, 2.5x magnification.
- Day display: full day name at 12 o'clock, discs in 24 languages.
- Bracelet: President, three semi-circular links, concealed Crownclasp.
- Water resistance: 100 m.
Movement checks
Set the day and the date, then watch midnight. On calibre 3255 both change together, and the day disc jumps in one step. Replica movements drag the day wheel for minutes, or move the date at 11:58 and the day at 00:06. Wind the crown and listen. A gold-colored rotor on a replica is brass with plating, and the engraving under the balance is shallow.
Case, bezel and lugs
Measure the case with calipers. A genuine Day-Date 36 reads 36.0 mm across the bezel and about 20 mm between the lugs. Replica cases run wider than 36.0 mm in many samples. The fluted bezel is the second check. Genuine flutes have sharp ridges that catch light along the full length. Replica flutes have flat crests and rounded valleys.
Dial and day wheel
Print on a genuine dial sits under the lacquer or under the sunburst finish. Replica print sits on top and catches a fingernail. The day wheel fonts differ. Compare the letter shapes in "Wednesday" and the spacing at the edge of the aperture. Then check the Cyclops. Genuine magnification is 2.5x, so the date fills the lens. Replicas magnify less and leave a visible ring of bare crystal.
Weight and metal
Gold is dense. A Day-Date 36 in 18k gold has a heft that a steel or brass case cannot copy, and the President bracelet adds most of it. Weigh the watch on a kitchen scale and compare it with a published figure for the same reference. Replica clasps carry shallow stamps, and plating inside the links wears to a different color at the edges.
What photos hide
- Hand alignment at 12 o'clock and the gap at the center post.
- Rehaut depth and the finish of the inner ring.
- Engraving between the lugs, which is laser-cut on replicas and looks grey.
- Day and date change timing, which a still photo cannot show.
- Weight, which a seller will not list.
Legal status in the US
Trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. 2320. A first offense carries up to 10 years in prison and a $2 million fine for an individual. CBP can detain and forfeit counterfeit watches at the border, including single pieces ordered for personal use. The trademark owner can also sue under the Lanham Act.
Questions to ask a seller
- Which movement is inside, and what is the power reserve?
- What does the watch weigh?
- What is the case diameter in millimeters, measured with calipers?
- Does the day disc jump in one step at midnight?
- What is the Cyclops magnification?
If a seller cannot answer these five questions with numbers, the listing gives you nothing to verify.
