Short answer
A fake Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean is a copy of a dive watch Omega has sold since 2005. Most copies sell for $300 to $700. Genuine references sell for $3,000 to $7,000 used and up to $8,000 new. The copy and the real watch share a 600 m depth rating on paper. They differ in movement, materials, and finish.
Genuine reference points
The Planet Ocean line covers case sizes of 39.5 mm, 42 mm, 43.5 mm, and 45.5 mm. Reference 2201.50.00 from 2005 used the cal. 2500 Co-Axial movement. Reference 232.30.42.21.01.001 from 2011 used cal. 8500. Reference 215.30.44.21.01.001 from 2016 uses cal. 8900, a Master Chronometer movement.
Omega fits the watch with a helium escape valve at 10 o'clock, a screw-down crown, and a unidirectional bezel with 120 clicks. Master Chronometer models carry METAS certification at 0/+5 seconds per day and 15,000 gauss magnetic resistance.
Common tells on copies
- Movement finish. The cal. 8500 and 8900 use two barrels, a silicon balance spring, and Cotes de Geneve arabesque stripes. Copies use a Seagull ST2130 or a decorated ETA 2824 with a stamped rotor.
- Beat rate. Real 8500 and 8900 movements run at 25,200 vph. Many copies run at 21,600 vph.
- Bezel insert. Liquidmetal models have the numerals fused into the ceramic. Copies use paint that sits above the surface.
- Weight. A real 43.5 mm steel Planet Ocean weighs about 220 g on the bracelet. Most copies weigh 150 g to 180 g.
- Caseback. Real 8500 and 8900 watches have a sapphire caseback with a red Omega logo on the rotor. Copies show a plastic movement ring and mismatched serial numbers.
- Lume. Real watches use Super-LumiNova. Copies fade in 20 to 30 minutes.
- Thickness. The real 43.5 mm case is 16.04 mm thick. Copies range from 14 mm to 18 mm.
Steps to verify one
- Open the caseback and read the movement number and balance wheel.
- Weigh the watch on a kitchen scale.
- Time the beat rate with a timegrapher or a phone app for 60 seconds.
- Check the serial number on the lug and compare it to the number on the movement.
- Look at the bezel under a magnifier. Paint edges show on copies.
- Ask for the Omega warranty card and the METAS test number.
Legal status in the US
US law bans the sale and import of counterfeit goods. 18 U.S.C. Section 2320 sets penalties of up to 10 years in prison for a first offense. Customs destroys seized shipments. Buying a copy for personal use carries lower risk than selling one, but the same statute applies to trafficking.
