The reference number problem
IWC catalog numbers use the pattern IW plus six digits, for example IW500710 or IW377714. "IW938450" has that shape. We could not match 938450 to a model in IWC's published catalog. Sellers use the string as a listing code. Treat it as a seller label, not a factory reference.
That changes how you read any review of it. A real reference gives you checkable specs: case diameter, caliber, water resistance, strap width. A seller code gives you nothing to verify.

Pick first: a used authentic watch or a hommage
A used IWC Mark series or Portofino sells for roughly $2,500 to $4,000 on the secondary market. You get a serial number, a service history, and resale value. A hommage from a microbrand costs $200 to $400, uses a Miyota or Seiko caliber, and comes with a warranty and spare parts. Both routes beat a $700 replica on every point except the logo on the dial.
Option 2: low tier replica, $90 to $180
This tier runs quartz or a low-grade Chinese automatic such as the DG2813. Gold-tone plating on these cases measures a few microns in teardowns posted on watch forums. Plating wear shows at the lugs within 12 to 18 months. Water resistance is a printed claim. The gaskets are fitted but not pressure tested.

Option 3: mid tier, $250 to $450
Sellers here advertise a "Swiss movement." Ask for a photo of the rotor and the balance wheel before paying. ETA stopped supplying bare movements outside the Swatch Group, so a new ETA 2824 in a $300 watch needs evidence. Sellita SW200-1 is the common Swiss substitute and is a real caliber. Chinese 2824 clones look close and cost less.
Option 4: "super clone," $600 and up
This tier copies case geometry and dial printing with more care. Movement decoration improves. Service parts do not exist. A watchmaker who will touch a clone caliber is hard to find, and a replacement movement costs as much as the watch. Resale value is close to zero.
Questions to ask before paying
- Which caliber is in the watch, and can you send a movement photo?
- What is the measured case diameter and lug width?
- Is the bracelet solid link or folded?
- What happens if customs seizes the parcel?
- Do you accept a return after inspection?
US legal status
Importing a counterfeit watch is illegal. CBP can seize the parcel, and the buyer has no recourse and no refund path. Trafficking in counterfeit goods carries federal penalties under 18 U.S.C. § 2320. Selling a replica as genuine is a separate offense.
