What IW329134 is
IW329134 is an IWC reference number. The IW3291 block covers the Aquatimer Automatic 42 mm, a steel dive watch. IWC lists that model with a 42 mm case, about 14 mm thick, 300 m of water resistance, and the calibre 30120 automatic movement. The last digits of an IWC reference mark a dial and strap combination, so IW329134 is one variant inside the block, not a separate model.
IWC does not publish a complete public archive of every reference. Confirm the dial color and the strap from the caseback engraving and from IWC's catalog entry before you treat the reference as verified.
Two products get called "fake"
Search results use the word for two things. A counterfeit is built to pass as a real IWC and sold as one. A replica is sold as a replica. The first is fraud. In the United States, 19 U.S.C. 1526 lets Customs and Border Protection seize counterfeit goods, and a buyer who paid for a genuine watch and got a copy has a claim against the seller.
The two groups fail in different places. Counterfeits aim at the outside. Replicas are advertised, so the seller states the movement and the case material up front.
Genuine vs copy: points you can check
- Caseback. Genuine engraving is cut into the steel with visible depth. Copies laser-etch a shallow line. The reference and the serial sit next to each other.
- Bezel. The Aquatimer Automatic 42 mm uses the IWC SafeDive system: the outer bezel turns counterclockwise and drives the inner ring. Copies turn both ways, or move the inner ring with a second crown.
- Beat rate. Calibre 30120 runs at 28,800 vph, 8 beats per second. The seconds hand moves in 8 steps per second. Many copies run at 21,600 vph, 6 beats per second.
- Power reserve. The genuine movement runs about 42 hours. A copy with a low-grade movement stops well before that.
- Case wear. Plated base-metal cases show brass at the edges after months of contact with skin and salt water.
- Lume. Applied indices sit in metal frames and glow green. Painted lume and a weak glow show up on copies.
Prices and what they tell you
Secondhand IW3291xx watches are listed in the low thousands of US dollars. Replica listings for the same reference spread from about $150 to $600. There is no single factory version of this reference. Sellers reuse one case and rename it across several references.
Before you buy
- Ask for a caseback photo with the reference and the serial readable.
- Match the full reference to the dial and strap in the IWC catalog.
- Ask for a video of the bezel turning.
- Time the seconds hand for 15 seconds and count the beats.
- Ask for service records, the box, and the papers.
- Pay with a method that allows a chargeback.
What is not known
IWC does not publish a full reference archive, and sellers apply IW329134 to more than one dial. Treat a listing without a readable caseback photo as unverified.
