Short answer
A fake IW329109 is a counterfeit of an IWC Aquatimer Automatic. The IW3291 family covers 42 mm steel dive watches from IWC. IWC does not sell through discount channels, and no counterfeit ships with a valid warranty card or service record. Published specs for the exact IW329109 suffix are thin, so ask for a caseback photo before any payment.
What the real watch does
An Aquatimer Automatic in this family uses a 42 mm stainless steel case, a sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on both sides, and 300 m of water resistance. The bezel is an external ring linked to an internal dive scale. Both parts move as one unit.
Inside sits calibre 30120. It runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz), holds about 42 hours of power reserve, hacks when the crown is pulled, and has a quick-set date.
Counterfeit price tiers
- $60 to $120: quartz, printed dial, painted bezel marks, mineral glass.
- $150 to $400: low-grade automatic, plated case, wrong case thickness.
- $450 to $900: so-called clone grade with a decorated Seagull or Miyota movement and a laser-etched caseback.
The top group is the one that appears in photos and passes at arm's length. It still loses value on resale. IWC service centers do not accept counterfeit watches, and parts do not interchange.
Tells on a fake Aquatimer
- Bezel: the outer ring must drive the inner scale with firm clicks. On fakes the ring spins free or the inner scale stays still.
- Caseback: reference, serial, and the IWC Probus Scafusia mark sit in deep engraving. Fakes show shallow laser lines, wrong fonts, or a serial with the wrong digit count.
- Crystal: double anti-reflective coating cuts glare. Fakes show a blue or purple sheen and bright reflections.
- Date: the aperture sits at 3 o'clock with a sharp frame. Fakes show an off-center date and a heavier typeface.
- Crown: unscrew it and check the threads. Coarse threads and a short stem point to a fake.
- Finish: bracelet links on fakes rattle, and clasp edges look stamped, not machined.
Movement check
Pull the crown to the time-setting position and watch the seconds hand. Calibre 30120 hacks. Many cheap fakes use a Miyota 8215, which keeps running. Hacking alone does not prove a real movement, since Seagull ST2130 clones also hack, but the test removes a large share of fakes.
Ask for a movement photo with the caseback removed. Look for the IWC stamp, the jewel count, and the finish on the bridges. Some fakes use a thin decorative plate over a plain movement.
Buying risk in the U.S.
Importing counterfeit goods is illegal under 19 U.S.C. § 1526, and trafficking carries penalties under 18 U.S.C. § 2320. U.S. Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit watches at ports of entry. A seized parcel is not returned.
Water resistance on a counterfeit is untested. Gaskets may be absent. Do not swim with one.
Verification steps
- Request photos of the caseback, the clasp code, and the crown threads.
- Request a movement photo with the back removed.
- Compare case diameter and thickness against published IWC specs for the IW3291 family.
- Take the watch to an authorized IWC service point and ask for an authentication and a service estimate.
- Pay with a card or a platform that offers buyer protection, and keep the listing text and photos.
IWC extends its international warranty to eight years for watches registered in the My IWC program. The extension applies to watches bought from authorized retailers. A counterfeit cannot be registered.
