IW3270 is not a Mark XX. The IW3270 reference covers the IWC Pilot's Watch Mark XVIII, a 40 mm steel watch with caliber 35111 and a 42 hour power reserve. The Mark XX carries reference IW3282, caliber 32111, and a 120 hour power reserve. A listing that reads "IW3270 Mark XX" merges two generations into one line. That merge is the first item to check, before dial photos or price.

What each reference number means

  • IW3270: Mark XVIII. Built from 2016 to 2022. Caliber 35111. 42 hour power reserve. 6 bar water resistance.
  • IW3282: Mark XX. Introduced in 2022. Caliber 32111. 120 hour power reserve. 10 bar water resistance. EasX-CHANGE strap release.

Both cases measure 40 mm across and take 20 mm straps. IWC lists the Mark XX at 10.8 mm thick.

Four numbers a copy has to fake

  1. 120 hour power reserve. Asian 2892 clones and Miyota 9015 movements stop at about 38 to 42 hours. Wind the watch, set it down, and time it.
  2. 28,800 vph. That equals 4 Hz and 8 beats per second. Count with a timegrapher app.
  3. 10 bar water resistance. Replica cases lose gasket fit. Do not assume 100 m.
  4. 40 mm case, 20 mm lugs. Measure with calipers. Copies land at 40.5 mm or 41 mm.

Dial and case tells

  • The text under 12 o'clock reads IWC over SCHAFFHAUSEN. Compare letter spacing and font weight against the official photo.
  • The triangle at 12 sits in line with the two dots beneath it. Crooked triangles show on cheaper cases.
  • The date wheel matches the dial color. Black dial, black wheel, white numerals. A white wheel on a black dial is wrong.
  • Hands are rhodium plated with lume fill. Cheap copies show a glossy finish and uneven fill at the edges.
  • Caseback engraving: font, depth, and serial format. Match the exact reference number.
  • The Mark XX uses IWC's quick release system. Replicas ship with standard spring bars.

Movement

IWC does not sell caliber 32111 as a loose part. No replica therefore holds a genuine 32111. Sellers use the word clone for a decorated Asian movement, often a 2892 pattern. Check the caseback type for your exact reference before you judge. If a listing shows an open caseback and the genuine reference uses solid steel, that is a mismatch. IWC lists the Mark XX with a soft iron inner case for magnetic protection, which limits what a display back can show.

Price and paperwork

Genuine Mark XX watches trade in the low thousands of US dollars. Replica listings run from about $60 to $800. A $700 copy that promises a 120 hour reserve does not exist. IWC cards carry a serial that matches the caseback and the movement. Copies often print one number in three places, or none.

Order of checks

  1. Reference number. IW3270 means Mark XVIII, IW3282 means Mark XX.
  2. Power reserve timing.
  3. Case diameter and lug width.
  4. Dial text, triangle alignment, date wheel color.
  5. Caseback engraving and serial.
