Short answer
"Fake Blancpain 5200" means any watch sold as a Blancpain Fifty Fathoms reference 5200 that Blancpain did not build. Copies sell from about $200 to $900. None carry the genuine caliber 1315. Importing one into the United States violates 19 U.S.C. § 1526, and US Customs and Border Protection can seize and destroy the parcel. Selling one as a real Blancpain is fraud in every state and a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. § 2320.
The real reference 5200
Reference 5200 sits in the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Automatique line. Factory specs list a 45 mm case, caliber 1315, three series-coupled mainspring barrels, a 120-hour power reserve, and 300 m water resistance. Blancpain has issued the 5200 in steel, titanium, and red gold with different bezel inserts and dials, so exact specs vary by sub-reference. Confirm the variant before you compare anything.
Blancpain has no public serial-number lookup tool. Authentication runs through a Blancpain service center or a watchmaker with the watch in hand.
What the copies use
- Case metal: 316L steel in most copies, including copies of titanium models. Weight differs.
- Movement: Chinese automatic calibers or cloned ETA 2824 and 2892 designs. Power reserve lands near 38 to 42 hours.
- Bezel insert: coated glass or sapphire-look glass with printed markings.
- Caseback: laser etching. Font, spacing, and depth differ from the original.
- Lume: shorter glow time after a charge.
Checks that settle the question
- Wind to full power, set the watch down, and check after three days. A watch that stops after two days is not a 1315.
- Read the caseback. Reference format is 5200-XXXX-XXXX, with a serial below it. Compare the font to photos from Blancpain.
- Weigh the watch. Titanium 5200 models weigh less than a steel copy of the same size.
- Inspect the date window and printed logo under a loupe. Centering and ink edges separate the two.
- Have a watchmaker open the case. Ask for photos of the rotor, jewel settings, and beveled edges on the bridges.
US law
19 U.S.C. § 1526 bars import of goods bearing a counterfeit mark. CBP can seize the parcel and assess a civil penalty. 18 U.S.C. § 2320 covers trafficking: up to 10 years in prison for a first offense. A personal purchase is not the same charge as trafficking, but the watch stays subject to seizure, and no US court will enforce a sale of it as genuine. Watches and jewelry appear among the categories in CBP annual intellectual property seizure reports.
Owners and buyers
If you own a copy, do not list it as a Blancpain. Label it as a replica or do not sell it. Independent watchmakers can service common clone movements. Blancpain service centers work on genuine watches only.
If you want a 5200, buy from an authorized dealer or a seller with the original invoice, warranty card, and box. A genuine 5200 sells in the five-figure range in US dollars. Ask for movement photos and have a watchmaker verify the watch before money changes hands.
