Short answer
A fake Aquatimer 3530 is a copy of an IWC Aquatimer from the GST generation, sold around 1998 to 2000. IWC's public archive and dealer listings do not agree on one reference number for that case family, and 3530 and 3536 both appear for the same era. Treat 3530 as a listing label. Confirm the number with IWC before you treat it as proof of anything.
What the real watch is
The first Aquatimer arrived in 1967 as reference 812 AD, a diver's watch with an internal rotating bezel. IWC brought the name back in 1998 inside the GST line: Gold, Steel, Titanium. The GST Aquatimer used a titanium case, a screw-down crown, a sapphire crystal and a rotating diver's bezel. Its movement was calibre 37524, a modified ETA 2892-A2 running at 28,800 vibrations per hour.
What replicas of this generation look like
- Case: brushed 316L steel, sold as titanium. Real titanium is lighter and greyer. Ask for a weight on a scale.
- Size: copies land near 42 mm across, with errors of 1 mm to 2 mm.
- Crystal: mineral glass on low tiers, sapphire on mid and high tiers.
- Movement: Seagull ST2130, a 2824 clone, Miyota 9015, or a DG2813 at the bottom.
- Bezel: 60-click or 120-click, with a lume pip that may sit off the 12 marker.
- Water resistance: claimed on paper, seldom tested. Do not swim or dive with a replica.
Price bands
Prices move with supply. As a rough guide for 2024 and 2025: $80 to $150 buys a low-grade copy with mineral glass and a DG2813. $250 to $450 buys a mid tier with sapphire and a 2824 clone. $500 and up buys the tier sellers call super clone, with better dial print and a decorated rotor. No replica matches a genuine titanium case.
Checks before you pay
- Ask for the case weight and a photo on a scale.
- Ask for a movement photo with the caseback off.
- Ask for a 10x macro shot of the dial text and the date window.
- Turn the crown. Two turns or less points to a soft tube.
- Ask if the watch was pressure tested. Most sellers say no.
- Compare caseback engraving depth against photos of a genuine example.
Replica versus genuine
Genuine GST Aquatimer watches carry a numbered caseback, a signed crown, and a movement marked IWC. A replica carries a copy of that engraving, often with a serial that repeats across units. Genuine titanium reads warm grey. Steel copies read colder and brighter under light. Lume on a genuine watch glows even and fades over hours. Lume on a cheap copy burns bright for 20 minutes and stops.
What is not known
IWC does not publish production totals for the GST Aquatimer. Public sources disagree on which reference number covers which variant and year. A seller who claims a firm production count for reference 3530 is guessing.
